The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an international standardised test for English language proficiency. It is desinged and managed by the British Council, University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and International Development Programme of Australian Universities (IDP)
IELTS exam has four parts: Listening, reading, writing and speaking. Speaking part of the test is a face-to-face interview between the test taker and an examiner. Many other exams like TOEFL are computer based but IELTS is a paper based exam.
IELTS measures candidate’s reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and assesses his/her ability to communicate for work, study or life in an English speaking environment.
There are two modules of the IELTS test: Academic or General Training. While listening and speaking are the same, reading and writing parts are different in the modules.
IELTS is desinged to test candidate’s English skills at every level. Each parts are marked by a number between 1-9 band scale. The individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an Overall Band Score. There is no pass or fail. IELTS is scored on nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence in English.
While General Training version is required in Canadian immigration, IELTS Academic version is used to get acceptance from colleges and universities.
In order to get above average mark at IELTS, test taker should have upper-intermediate or advance level of English.
